Isithunzi

By Colin Crafford

Evelyn Hart was once a Catholic nun. She left the order for love, and with her husband built a small clinic and school in a remote valley of Zululand. Together they brought healing, education and hope to people far removed from the world Evelyn had once known.

Along the way they took in Themba, an orphan who slowly became the son they had never expected to have. Their isolated life becomes one of family, purpose and belonging in a land Evelyn comes to love.

Then William dies.

Evelyn's faith dies with him.

Consumed by grief, she turns to a neighbouring sangoma, a respected woman known for communicating with the dead. What answers Evelyn at first appears to be everything she desperately hoped for — William's voice, their private memories, the things only the two of them could possibly have known.

But as the visits continue, something begins to change. The presence knows too much. It appears where it should not be. And slowly, Evelyn discovers that whatever is speaking to her may not be William at all.

It learns from memory.
It feeds on grief.
And it becomes what you cannot bear to lose.

Themba sees what Evelyn refuses to see. The thing that has entered their lives is not the man who raised him. It is something else — something that found its way through sorrow and discovered that love can open doors that should remain closed.

How far will you go to hold on to the ones you love?
And what will happen when love opens the wrong door?

A Story Born in Zululand

Set against the extraordinary beauty of rural KwaZulu-Natal, Isithunzi is a story of love, loss, family, faith and the unseen world that exists beyond what we understand. English and Zulu lives meet in a landscape where ancient beliefs, modern medicine and unbearable grief collide — and where the greatest danger may come not from hatred, but from refusing to let go of those we love.

Some shadows never leave.
They grow.
